With so many fragrances on the market to choose from, finding your go-to scent—or let’s be honest, scents—can be a daunting task. That’s why we asked fragrance expert and TAMMIRA Personalizer David Ecker to teach us all a thing or two about how to identify scents we like and discover new favorites.
But before we dig in, there are two key concepts that will help you choose the right scent and lasting power for your individual preferences: Concentration Strength and Fragrance Families.
Concentration Strength
You’ve probably noticed that there are different types of perfumes and colognes available—most notably eau fraîche, eau de cologne, eau de toilette, and eau de parfum. But in case those words mean nothing to you, here’s a quick breakdown:
Eau Fraîche: These fragrances have a concentration of only 1-2% perfume oil. This is perfect for those who prefer lighter, more subtle aromas, or scents that fade within a few hours.
Eau de Cologne: Colognes have a slightly higher concentration of perfume oil, at 2-4%. Typically lasting 2-3 hours, these allow you to freshen up throughout the day or night.
Eau de Toilette: Also known as an EDT, these fragrances range from 5-15% perfume oil. This creates a bold (yet not overpowering) first impression that fades over 4-7 hours.
Eau de Parfum: The strongest concentration of perfume oil, EDPs come in at 10-20% and typically last for about 8 hours.
Fragrance Families
There are four main families of fragrance: Woody, Amber, Fresh, and Floral. Each of these families comes with its own set of subcategories to best describe the intricacies of the scent. Although there’s a lot of room for crossover between the different scent families, it’s a good idea to have an understanding of which type(s) you’re drawn to before you head out to the store or click “add to cart.”

WOODY
Woody fragrances focus on resins and woods, such as Cedarwood, Gaiacwood, Papyrus, Sandalwood, Driftwood, Oud, Musk, and Benzoin.
These fragrances are likely to evoke feelings of adventure, confidence, power, elegance, and romance. Woody scents have a bold, rustic, outdoor appeal—creating a warm base for aromatic blends.

Amber fragrances (also known as Oriental) primarily rely on notes of amber, musk, sandalwood, and patchouli.
